A record number of students are set to start university and college this autumn with applications and offers up, the admissions service has said.
Applications to the most selective universities have increased and offer-making from top institutions has risen from last year’s high, figures suggest.
As of June 30 – the final deadline to apply to up to five courses simultaneously – a total of 2,955,990 applications had been made through Ucas – a 6% rise on 2020 when there were 2,789,160 applications.
The figures show 1,998,690 offers have been made by universities and colleges, up 3% on last year when there were 1,942,270 offers at this point of the admissions cycle.
The 46-year-old from Eastwood, said: “As a parent hearing about it spreading quickly again is a concern. “You’ve just got to look at the figures and can see that younger people are getting ill and coming down with the virus. “It’s a worry whether there will end up being another surge in the winter too and whether we will end up in lockdown again. “I’m lucky my kids are in good health, but we’ve really got to concentrate on protecting the vulnerable.” As of 3pm Tuesday, 2,183 pupils were self-isolating in Southend. This was across all settings, from early years to university.
The University has confirmed it “expects to life some restrictions” in light of government Covid-19 rules being relaxed from July 19th.
In an email to all students and staff, the University said it is “currently working through the implications of the announcement”. They will send a “detailed update following the next Government announcement”, due on Monday 12th July. In the meantime, current restrictions remain in place.
“Following the move to Step 4 we do expect to lift some University restrictions, in line with Government guidance, and will adapt to the context on campus. We will provide more information on health and safety measures on campus in the coming weeks”
