High time to vaccinate teachers and support staff
The recent spate of COVID-19 cases in schools across Sydney’s eastern suburbs indicates yet again that teachers and support staff should be prioritised for vaccination.
“The IEU has been calling for teachers to be included in priority groups for vaccination since January this year,” said Acting Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT Branch Secretary Carol Matthews. The IEU represents teachers and support staff in the non-government education sector.
“Our postion has stayed the same since January – it is not only in the interests of teachers and support staff to get vaccinated, but also the entire community,” Matthews said.

Some early childhood teachers could soon receive a pay rise, after the Fair Work Commission handed down a decision supporting pay rises of up to 10% for teachers in early childhood education and care services.
The decision was made in response to a claim by the Independent Education Union of Australia (IEUA) and is the result of an eight-year action by the NSW/ACT branch of the union.
If the pay rises are implemented, it is anticipated that approximately 12,000 early childhood educators in about 8000 long day care centres will benefit from the change.

Participation in politics is a critical element of socially inclusive development and realisation of human rights.
However, while the right to participate in politics and public life is well-established in human rights law, there is a spirited attempt by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to deny tutors these rights in a variety of ways.
A recent circular by TSC addressed to various public authorities and whose content specifically targets teachers reveals an attempt by the employer to gag tutors and curtail their democratic freedoms as contained in the Constitution.
