About two dozen people were shot within the Springfield city limits through the first three months of this year. That is more than three times the number of shootings victims the city had from January through March each of the last two years.
Seven people were shot locally in the first three months of 2019 and 2020, respectively, as compared to the 23 who were shot in the first few months of this year.
There were three homicides in the city through the first 90 days of 2021, according to Springfield Police Chief Kenny Winslow. In 2020, there were 11 total homicides and nine in 2019.
“Obviously, gun violence is a huge issue in our community right now,” said Winslow last week during a live panel discussion on the city’s gun violence. “One shooting is one shooting too many. One homicide is one homicide too many. There’s never an acceptable level. But we’ve seen a huge spike.”
