£700,000 won by union for teachers injured at work

SCOTLAND’S largest teaching union has secured almost £700,000 in compensation settlements for members injured at work over the past year. The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has worked with members making 14 claims for violence in workplaces, personal injury and accidents.  The total won by the EIS represents an increase of more than 100 per cent compared with the 2019 figure of just over £290,000. The union has warned that the increase in claims remains a concern, pointing to a lack of health and safety enforcement being responsible for the largest number of cases.  EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said: “It is never a welcome development to report on an increase in compensation payments received by our members.

SCOTTISH Friends of Palestine was formed in 1982 in response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and subsequent attacks on Palestinian refugee communities.  The organisation enjoys support across the trade union movement and one of the founder members was the late Bill Speirs, former general secretary of the Scottish Trade Union Congress. Although our activities have been restricted due to Covid-19, our committee has made use of online facilities to continue our work. On October 24 we held an online conference looking at medical links between Scotland and Palestine, particularly with reference to cancer treatment. This was a very informative event and it was particularly encouraging to hear about the work of British charity Medical Aid for Palestinians which is supported by a number of medical professionals based in Scotland.
