National Mathematics Day 2020: National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. For the budding mathematicians of the country, who want to pursue the field but are unable to continue their higher education due to lack of funds, here is a list of institutes and organisations which offer scholarships and fellowships for students aspiring to make a career in mathematics.

The India Spelling Bee announced the national-level champions for the finale held on December 20. The winners from all five categories have been announced, including grade 1 for class 1, grade 2 for classes 2 and 3, grade 3 for classes 4 and 5, grade 4 for classes 6 and 7 and grade 5 for classes 8 and 9.
The winners are, grade 1- Manav Khurana, Scholars Global School, Bahadurgarh, grade 2- Kuval Anand, Sri Venkateshwar International School, New Delhi, grade 3- Aayra Dhindsa Sawkmie, Sanskriti School, New Delhi, grade 4- Achintya Jha, St Columba’s School, New Delhi, grade 5- Ananta Jaiswal, Little Flower School, Jamshedpur.
Since this academic session has been held in the online mode entirely, there had been a lot of apprehensions in minds of students and teachers. The minister, however, announced that there will not be any online board exams. Citing the plight of students who do not have access to the internet, the minister said the exams will be held offline and efforts are on to ensure every student has access to quality education during the pandemic through different modes.
He also said that the exams will be held on reduced syllabus. The central and state boards have announced a reduction in syllabus earlier. The minister too in an earlier live interaction had announced that in case schools continue to remain shut, there will be an alternative to the practical exams.

The innovation of plant-based mock egg by Prof Kavya Dashora, Centre for Rural Development and Technology, IIT Delhi has secured first prize at Innovate4SDG contest by ‘UNDP (United Nation Development Program) Accelerator Lab India’. The award includes a sum of $5000. According to the UNDP, the mock egg innovation will help in accelerating progress towards the SDGs.
