In a recent email fraud incident, employees in the finance department of a clinical trial software firm based in New York City were conned into wiring $4.8 million to an offshore bank account to facilitate a supposed company acquisition. The fraudulent emails purportedly came from the company president (they even included the executive’s picture) and an outside attorney. In reality, cybercriminals had simply made it appear that the emails “from” fields were legitimate.
Even with moves to reduce your number of spoofed emails or make them easier to recognize, emails that spoof the display name can still land in your employees’ inboxes.

Some of the UK’s biggest hotel brands may be exposing themselves and their customers to the risk of phishing attacks due to a lack of adequate messaging security, according to Proofpoint.
The security vendor took a look at the primary corporate domains associated with the 60 most popular listed hospitality companies in the country, as ranked by YouGov.
It found that half (50%) have no published DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) record. The protocol is important in the fight against scam emails as it is meant to ensure that only authorized senders can send messages from registered domains.
Cyberattacks are still the number 1 threat to Middle East’s businesses. With a rising number of employees switching to hybrid working models, IT infrastructure and data centers of a large number of companies are at risk of being breached by cyber criminals.
Email and social media users also need to watch out for phishing attempts that could lead to information theft.
According to a recent survey by Proofpoint and Etisalat’s Help AG, 15 per cent of organizations in UAE suffered a phishing attack in 2019, with an additional 15 per cent suffering a business email compromise attack.
In the meantime, only around 69 per cent of the Forbes ‘Top 100 Middle East Companies’ have a Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC) record in place. In other words, 31 per cent of them are leaving customers at risk of email fraud.
5 Ways to Transform Your Phishing Defenses Right Now
By transforming how you approach phishing, you can break the phishing kill chain and meaningfully reduce your business risk.
When I talk with chief information security officers (CISOs) about email security, I often hear something like this:
They have a problem with phishing attacks. So, they buy new security software. But the CEO continues receiving phishing emails, which he forwards to the CISO, demanding to know why they re still experiencing phishing attacks. Then they buy new security software. And so on.
