Clayton Fire Co names April Member of the Month

Delaware News Desk During the May monthly meeting of the Clayton Fire Co., Fire Police Officer and Life Member Ron Burnett was named the April Member of the Month. Each month, the fire company takes time to recognize one of its members for going above and beyond for the month. The member receives a certificate ad a $50 gift card, this member does not always have to attend the most alarms, trainings, functions or other company events. Officers look at the “big picture” when selecting members of the month, taking a number of factors into account.   Burnett is a 27-year member of the company, and remains one of its most active members.

Smyrna Board of Education election May 11 Delaware News Desk Two candidates are running for a five-year term on the Smyrna Board of Education Tuesday, May 11. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., at: Smyrna Elementary, 121 S. School Lane, Smyrna; Smyrna Middle School, 700 Duck Creek Parkway, Smyrna; Kenton Ruritan Club, 249 S. Main St. (Route 300), Kenton. The candidates are Diane Eastburn of Clayton and Charlie D. Wilson of Smyrna. To be eligible to vote, a person must be at least 18 on the day of the election, be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the school district and must provide proof of identity and address such as a Delaware driver’s license, Delaware ID card or work ID card with photo and home address.

New Smyrna library site selected, tax district planned

Smyrna/Clayton Sun-Times A proposal for a new library in Smyrna would provide almost four times more space for about $25 more per year to the average homeowner’s property tax bill. Advocates for the project, the Friends of the Duck Creek Regional Library, have secured a 99-year lease on town property on South Main Street that includes the parking lot at Foxwell Street and Dwight Avenue. “We needed to get that lease signed,” said Joanne Masten, the president of the Friends group. “We have a ways to go, but now we have the location.” Masten is also the Kent County Levy Court First District commissioner and former Smyrna mayor.

Girl Scout Troop 547 launches shoe drive fundraiser for international trip

Girl Scout Troop 547 launches shoe drive fundraiser for international trip Delaware News Desk Girl Scout Troop 547 will hold a shoe drive fundraiser from May 10 through June 25 to raise funds for their international trip, scheduled for June 2022.   The troop is working with an organization called Funds2Orgs and will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected. They are collecting all shoe styles and sizes, with a goal of collecting 2,500 pairs of shoes.  Donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise/small business partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families.
