Drug trial of Craig man begins in Eagle County

Kelli Duncan/kduncan@vaildaily.com The trial of a Craig man accused of trafficking drugs in Eagle County began Tuesday after more than four years of dismissals, an appeal, and a mistrial. In the first day of the trial of Curtis Dean Shewfelt, the prosecution characterized Shewfelt as a reckless drug dealer who was found in a car containing heroin in 2017 and later arrested on evidence that he was on his way to deliver to another dealer in Gypsum. Shewfelt and his friend Holiday Sanchez were delivering heroin “across the Front Range” from Loveland to Gypsum, arriving in Vail in the early morning hours of July 13, 2017, lead prosecuting attorney Johnny Lombardi said in his opening remarks.

The only tool we have: CDOT turns to response strategies following multiple mudslides on I-70

Vail Daily Mudslides and debris flows are expected to continue for years to come with little to no possible mitigation solutions. CDOT/Special to the Daily Over the past few weeks, mudslides and flash flood warnings have prompted continual closures of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon. A result of the Grizzly Creek Fire burn scar, the steep slopes surrounding the interstate in the canyon have become increasingly susceptible to these large debris flows. And really, there’s not much anyone can do. “We’ve all known that this risk of mudslides was here,” said David Boyd, public affairs officer for the White River National Forest.

Van Beek: Head out for National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual event, held on the first Tuesday in August, to celebrate community, safety and service. Across the nation, neighbors gather to enjoy an evening of good food, music, games, safety demonstrations, visits from various first responder organizations and simply great conversation with friends, old and new. For 37 years, law enforcement agencies have come together to create an evening under the stars that is filled with fun and games for the entire family. After a challenging year of limited social contact, this is an opportunity to reach out to those who, through it all, continued to serve and protect and did so with pride and a genuine desire to help their friends and neighbors. The uniform they wear represents the value they place upon creating a more caring place to live.

On March 25, Rebel L. Bonser Jr., 27, drove recklessly to evade police from the Loaf & Jug gas station in Eagle to a portion of U.S. Highway 6 near Wolcott, where he and passenger Ariel S. Gomez, 27, also from Arvada, were apprehended. Gomez, who helped throw the drugs out the window but later said she was “scared for her life,” took a plea deal in May and was sentenced to just 60 days in jail.
