Citing First Amendment, judge dismisses charges against antiracist protesters in Chelsea

CHELSEA, MI Impeding traffic charges have been dismissed against several of the protestors who participated in demonstrations last summer in the city of Chelsea.
Washtenaw County 14A-3 District Court Judge Anna Frushour declined to charge members of an antiracist activist group on impeding traffic violations, ruling that punishing the individuals would be in violation of the First Amendment of the United Sates Constitution.

A motion has been filed to dismiss a lawsuit brought by an environmental activist against the company that installed a controversial natural gas pipeline through Livingston County.
The suit was filed last October in U.S. District Court in Detroit by Michigan resident Matthew Borke against Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the ET Rover pipeline, and its Chairman Kelcy Warren. The companyâs security contractor, Leighton Security, was also named in the suit, along with that company s CEO Kevin Mayberry and Operations Manager Gary Washburn.
Energt Transfer constructed the 42-inch diameter pipeline which carries 3.25 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day up from the Marcellus and Utica Shale through West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio, crossing into Michigan in Lenawee County, then proceeding north through Washtenaw and Livingston counties before joining the Vector Pipelin
I ve been to East Lansing several times.
My barber is in Downtown East Lansing.
I go shopping in East Lansing a lot.
I m African American. And I ve never been pulled over in East Lansing.
Am I lucky? Was it my car? Was it because I m there mostly during the day?
Or is it just a matter of time?
And even though I haven t been pulled over, news like this bothers me and makes me think.
Data from the East Lansing Police Department showed African-American residents in East Lansing were almost three times more likely to be pulled over by police than Caucasians. (WLNS)

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – Eli Savit promised voters he’d make progressive changes in the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office before ultimately being elected to the office.
With more than 30 days under his belt as the county’s newly elected prosecutor, it would be hard to deny he isn’t living up to his campaign promises.
2 men plead no contest in fatal Ypsilanti-area park shooting

ANN ARBOR, MI – Two men accused of killing a man during a botched robbery at an Ypsilanti Township park a year ago will not be facing a jury.
James Solomon Warren and Stevie Lynn Brooks both entered no contest pleas to armed robbery and second-degree murder Jan. 27 before Washtenaw County Trial Judge Archie Brown, court records show.
The pair, both 18, were each charged with one count each of open murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two counts of felony firearm, in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Brian Aldin Matthews III.
