The Cal State Los Angeles mass vaccination site will allow any adult to stand in line for a COVID-19 vaccine between Thursday and the end of Sunday, the governor’s Office of Emergency Services said Wednesday night.
The decision comes about a week before the state, starting April 15, formally allows any Californian 16 and older to get the vaccine.
The move came about because there has, in recent days, been excess capacity at the Cal State L.A. site to administer COVID-19 vaccinations.
Thousands of appointment slots there have gone unbooked by eligible people through the MyTurn registration system. As a result, vaccinators at the site have been allowed to inoculate adults walking up to the site without an appointment including people outside of the eligibility criteria, said Brian Ferguson, a spokesman with the Office of Emergency Services.

Officials at the Governor s Office of Emergency Services announced Wednesday morning that there were immediate appointments available for vaccines at the federally operated site at Cal State Los Angeles. Appointments were also readily available at many Los Angeles city-operated sites, and county Supervisor Janice Hahn took to Twitter to say there were slots waiting at a vaccination center in San Pedro.
To the extent to which appointment go unfilled, there may be a limited number of appointments available as walk ups for individuals 18+ between (Thursday) and continuing through Sunday when management of the site transfers to the city, Greg Renick, the information officer for the governor s office, said Wednesday.
NBC4 is attempting to confirm whether the walkup shots are open to anyone 18 years and older or those 18 and older who meet the state and county requirements.
Starting April 15, any Californian 16 and older can get the vaccine.
Renick said an appointment through the state s MyTurn system is the only way a vaccination at the site will be guaranteed. All appointments for Thursday were filled, Renick said.
