Eviction worries mount in NH as CDC moratorium is set to end

These days, the complicated state of New Hampshire’s economy can be seen in a number: the weekly eviction rate. At 60 evictions filed in state courts per week, the number is about half of what it was before the COVID-19 pandemic, notes Elliott Berry, a housing attorney with New Hampshire Legal Assistance  But it’s not exactly zero, either – even with a federal eviction moratorium that in theory has prevented landlords from initiating evictions for nonpayment of rent.  “Plenty have gone forward,” Berry said. “But on the other hand, plenty have not.” Now, as state and federal officials begin to pare back pandemic-era protections, Berry and other housing experts are keeping their eye on a key event: The federal moratorium on evictions is set to end soon, and New Hampshire housing attorneys say a spike in tenants removed from their homes is likely to follow. 

Yankee Fishermen s Co-op concerned NH may take back COVID relief funds

The cooperative at Seabrook Harbor grossed more revenue in 2020 than 2019, according to president Jim Titone. Titone said he received a $270,000 grant through the state’s Main Street Relief Fund, via the Governor’s Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery (GOFERR), which distributed federal CARES Act funds. He said he is concerned the cooperative will have to return the grant partially or in full, because on paper, it appears as though they were more prosperous, despite the pandemic, even though many of the facilities and equipment are at least 30 years old and are due for replacement. Titone said the pandemic closed a number of wholesale fisheries in New England and many new fishermen joined Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative. He said because of space limitations at the cooperative, lobsterman would have to rotate the crates through the existing lobster tank to keep them fresh.
