Did New Mexico Really Abolish Qualified Immunity for Police Officers? Not Exactly

Are States Really Abolishing Qualified Immunity for Cops? Not Exactly. Kerem Yucel/Getty Images According to the news, New Mexico supposedly abolished qualified immunity last week. Axios reported that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill that “eliminates a legal defense known as qualified immunity, making it easier to sue government employees, including police officers, for civil rights violations.” Fox News claimed that she had “signed a law Wednesday eliminating qualified immunity for law enforcement.” More than a few localnewsoutlets also described the law as ending or effectively ending qualified immunity in New Mexico.
