Testifying on Tuesday, 26 January, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo pledged to use science and data to help move the seafood industry forward if she becomes the country s next secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
With senators from several major fishing states represented on the panel, Raimondo got plenty of time to discuss her views on the commercial fishing industry during the hearing, which lasted over two-and-a-half hours. She noted seafood is a key industry in her home state of Rhode Island.
How long they actually stay is another question.
Democrat Raimondo is poised to resign mid-term to take a new job, in Washington, as President Joe Biden s commerce secretary. Her confirmation hearing was Tuesday. An committee vote on her nomination is anticipated next Wednesday, February 3.
The exact timing of Raimondo s departure is unclear. But Sen. Roger Wicker, the Mississippi Republican who chairs the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, told Raimondo on Tuesday: I do not believe you will be serving as governor of the state of Rhode Island for very much longer.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Tuesday morning, Governor Gina Raimondo will defend her nomination for Secretary of Commerce. She’ll go before the Senate Commerce Committee and if approve, she will be one step closer to taking on her new role in President Bidens’ cabinet.
The Governor is expected to testify virtually from Rhode Island. She will be introduced by Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed and peppered with questions on operations and most likely, Biden’s economic plan.
The Governor has served for two terms and said she will remain at her post until confirmed by the Senate.
It was just a few weeks ago when Governor Raimondo took the stage with President Biden and his other cabinet picks. Governor Raimondo was officially introduced as the next Secretary of Commerce for the United States.
