1996年，地级泰州市刚刚成立，那时，全市仅有宁通一条高速公路，标准里程仅有46公里。1996年10月，广靖高速公路开工；1998年10月，宁靖盐高速开工；2007年江海高速开工，全长近100公里，从泰州中部穿过，2010年建成通车，成为苏中腹地通江达海、连接上海的快速通道。 2014年，是泰州高速公路建设的突破之年，当年5月泰镇高速开工，12月25日阜兴泰高速兴化至泰州段、京沪高速江广扩容泰州段同时开工，三条高速总里程约110公里，是当年全省在建里程最长、在建项目最多、投资最大的地级市。 2016年12月，泰镇高速建成通车，在泰州城区东部有了一条串联启扬高速、宁通高速的高速公路，市民出行更加便捷。2017年12月，兴泰高速建成通车，结束了兴化作为全省唯一不通高速县级市的历史。2018年6月，京沪高速泰州段改扩建完成交工验收，成为江苏
