KAILUA-KONA (AP) Hawaii island’s mayor is still hospitalized after suffering a heart attack and undergoing a procedure to implant a stent.
Mayor Mitch Roth was being treated in Hilo Medical Center after experiencing chest pain Saturday evening, West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday.
The former Hawaii County prosecutor, who ran as an independent candidate and began his first term in office in December, was under evaluation by medical staff Monday.
“He’s still in the hospital, but he’s recovering and he’s in great spirits,” spokesman Cyrus Johnasen said.
Roth, 56, is not infected with the coronavirus, Johnasen said.
Mayor Mitch Roth was taken to the North Hawai’i Community last night due to discomfort in his chest. He was later transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he had a stent implanted according to a release from Hawaii County officials.
Hawai’i County Managing Director Lee Lord will serve as acting Mayor as Mayor Roth recovers. “I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers at this time,” said Mayor Roth. “I have have had excellent treatment from the moment I began to feel discomfort, and would especially like to thank our Hawai’i County first responders for their adept response and care. My wife Noriko and I look forward to a speedy recovery and are confident that Lee (Lord) will do a phenomenal job as acting Mayor,” Roth added.
