HOWARD COUNTY, MD The county has tapped its first equity and restorative practices manager, naming Dr. Denise Boston of Baltimore to the position. This is a permanent role within the office of human rights and equity, and will be responsible for identifying any practices or policies needed to ensure equity, recommend and implement training and competency-building, and develop strategic community partnerships. Dr. Boston s position was created specifically to identify practices or policies needed to ensure equity and develop strategic community partnerships centered around this work. Understanding the huge undertaking of this position, we ensured Dr. Boston would be able to make a long-term impact by establishing it in the office of human rights and equity. HOWARD COUNTY, MD On Wednesday, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball recognized the 118th Annual Korean American Day with a virtual celebration, noting the time when the first Korean immigrants arrived in the United States in 1903. The event featured remarks from First Lady Yumi Hogan, Sen. Clarence Lam and Sen. Susan Lee, along with speakers from the League of Korean Americans – Maryland, League of Korean-Americans – Howard County, the Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington, the Greatest Korean-American Association of the State of Maryland and the Howard County Senior Association.
For most of the coronavirus pandemic, Howard County’s metrics have been better than the statewide numbers, sometimes even by a considerable amount. However, the county’s numbers are now only slightly better than the state.
An audit of Howard County’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report has found that the county saw a revenue surplus of $61.2 million for fiscal 2020, far above expectations.
