As new COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Erie County, talk of a new indoor mask policy for unvaccinated and vaccinated people is making the rounds. Wednesday, County Executive Mark Poloncarz said a requirement could come this week.
For restaurant owner and Restaurant Association Chapter President Jimmy Butera, another mask mandate brings up memories of last year’s struggles of maintaining his business amidst the worst of the pandemic.
“It’s alarming that we re talking about it,” he said. “It s really frustrating as a business owner, to have to think about what the repercussions are going to be if this continues to go up.”

ECMC, other hospital systems PPE supply destroyed in Amherst fire
ECMC says they have two weeks of PPE supply on-hand at the hospital, and the county is helping to restock what was lost in the fire. Author: Nate Benson (WGRZ) Updated: 11:23 PM EDT July 21, 2021
BUFFALO, N.Y. ECMC has two weeks worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) for their staff on hand at their Grider Street facility.
The remaining 75-day supply of PPE was destroyed in the fire on Earhart Drive in Amherst Tuesday, according to an ECMC spokesperson. We anticipate being able to restock quickly, said Peter Cutler, vice president of communications and external affairs at ECMC. Had this happened a year ago, it would be a much different story.
