COVID brought cameras, Zoom to courtroom, Chauvin trial: Will it last?

USA TODAY Nearly 22.8 million Americans watched last month as a Minnesota jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd with a knee on his neck.  Hundreds of thousands of people listened to livestreamed audio last year as the Supreme Court heard arguments over whether then-President Donald Trump s tax returns should be turned over to investigators. Even less well-known cases are drawing keen public interest. Roughly 350 people watched via Zoom on Tuesday as former nursing assistant Reta Mays was sentenced in federal court to seven life terms in prison for using insulin to murder aging patients in a West Virginia VA hospital.

(Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office via AP, File) MINNEAPOLIS (CN) The state-court trial of three former Minneapolis police officers accused of aiding and abetting the murder of George Floyd has been delayed until next year pending the resolution of federal civil rights charges.  Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill made the decision at the end of a contentious Thursday morning hearing in the cases of former officers Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng. He pushed the officers’ August 2021 trial date back to March 7, 2022, citing the logistical problems of conducting two trials so close to each other along with the probability of heavy pretrial publicity.

Derek Chauvin Could Be Sentenced to More Time in Prison Than Previously Thought. Here s Why On 5/12/21 at 12:12 PM EDT Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin could spend more years in prison than previously expected for his role in the murder of George Floyd. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill ruled Wednesday that he will consider four aggravating factors in Chauvin s sentencing, which will allow him to go above the normal sentencing guidelines. Cahill found beyond a reasonable doubt that Chauvin abused his power as a police officer; treated Floyd with particular cruelty; acted with children present; and committed his acts as part of a group with the active participation of at least three other officers.

Judge to consider longer sentence for Derek Chauvin

Judge to consider longer sentence for Derek Chauvin By Allie Johnson (Minnesota Dept. of Corrections) MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said he will consider an upward departure from the sentencing guidelines for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin after finding aggravating factors in George Floyd s death, according to an order made public Wednesday.  Last month, a jury found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25, 2020 death. Under Minnesota statutes, Chauvin will only be sentenced for the most serious charge, second-degree unintentional murder, which according to the state s sentencing guidelines has a presumptive sentence of 12 1/2 years in prison.
