ACPS expanding summer school options, hours, activities to make up for COVID-19 learning loss By Riley Wyant | March 15, 2021 at 6:30 PM EDT - Updated March 15 at 6:30 PM
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County is planning to largely expand its summer school programs to help combat learning loss from the coronavirus pandemic. An entire task force is sorting out plans to get kids back on track.
Albemarle County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Haas says the school division is inviting all students back for summer school as a part of a learning recovery plan. The plan will involve activities beyond the classroom to help kids socialize and reconnect.
Harford County Public Schools officials plan to stick with their current schedule of bringing students back for in-person learning on a hybrid basis, but they also encouraged members of the community to do everything they can to reduce to spread of COVID-19 so schools can remain open.
âFortify yourself with a flock of friends.â Those typed-out words were found among Cecil Richard âDickâ Huffmanâs belongings just a few days after he passed away. That sentence must have resonated with him because he found a friend everywhere he went.
Mr. Huffman, or Dick as most knew him, is best-known in the Dry Fork community for his time as principal at Whitmell Elementary School (1964-1990). An aerial photograph of the school still hangs in his home as a reminder of the time spent there. It was inside those walls he touched hundreds of lives and possibly pulled just as many teeth. His family has heard from dozens of former students, teachers, and staff, many who recall his quick wit, level head, and knack for pulling teeth.
