ANN ARBOR, MI Washtenaw County leaders and community members say they are hopeful the guilty verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin leads to greater accountability for police in abuse cases.
Chauvin was convicted Tuesday, April 20, in the May 25, 2020 death of George Floyd, whose neck he kneeled on for nearly nine minutes, sparking the largest civil rights movement in decades.

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office is joining forces with a statewide non-profit group to aid in protecting the county’s LGBTQ community.
Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit has partnered with the Fair Michigan Justice Project to expand its role in prosecuting serious crimes committed against members of the LGBTQ community, according to an announcement of the agreement released Tuesday, March 16.

ANN ARBOR, MI Mayor Christopher Taylor is officially declaring March 15 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Day in Ann Arbor.
In recognition of what would have been the late U.S. Supreme Court justice’s 88th birthday, Taylor issued a proclamation he plans to read at Monday night’s City Council meeting, describing her as “an inspiring role model for women” and a “champion of civil rights for all people regardless of gender.”
