The 65-year-old Napoleon died at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Thursday evening in the company of family, according to his daughter Tiffani Jackson. Napoleon who was appointed sheriff in 2009 and has been reelected multiple times announced he’d tested positive for the virus on Nov. 19. He was admitted to the hospital the following day and remained there until his death.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who dedicated decades to public service and became a household name to metro Detroiters, died Thursday evening following a month-long fight with COVID-19.  Napoleon was with family when he died at Henry Ford Hospital, his daughter Tiffani Jackson said. He was 65.  In a text message while still at the hospital, she thanked the community for its prayers and asked that they continue. As Wayne County residents think of her father, she also asked them to turn their memories toward his dedication.  Remember his generosity, integrity and faithfulness as a public servant for over 45 years, she said. Remember how kind he was to everyone he came in contact with and how much he loved his family.  

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon dies of complications from COVID-19

Credit Wayne County Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died after contracting COVID-19. Napoleon was 65 years old.  He was admitted to the hospital on November 21, and died several weeks after being placed on a ventilator. Napoleon was appointed sheriff in 2009, and he was elected to the position in 2012, and reelected every four years since then.  Napoleon began his career as a police officer in the Detroit Police Department. He became police chief in 1998, and retired from the department in 2001. In 2013, Napoleon lost in the race for Detroit Mayor against Mike Duggan. In a statement, Duggan said: I am shocked and saddened at the loss of one of our city’s greatest public servants and native sons, Benny Napoleon.
