Sexual Assault Awareness Month Promotes Importance of Community Partnerships

We’re nearing the end of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about sexual violence, educate communities on how to prevent it, and build prevention efforts throughout the year. Washington County Attorney John Gish has been working with the Rape Victim Advocacy Program this month to educate residents on where and by whom sexual assault is commonly perpetrated. About three out of four sexual assaults go unreported to law enforcement and out of every 1,000 sexual assaults, 995 perpetrators will walk free, according to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network. While Gish can’t illustrate a recent local trend in sexual assault reports or convictions, he notes a change in community partnerships, “What I can say affirmatively is that our relationships between my office, the Washington Police Department, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rape Victim Advocacy Program have really strengthened and I think that only goes to help victims of sexu

Washington County Supervisors Approve Revised Procurement Policy

After tabling the item last week, the Washington County Board of Supervisors approved changes to the county’s procurement policy during their meeting Tuesday. County Engineer Jacob Thorius commented that he changed some of the wording of the policy after talking with County Attorney John Gish, which now includes that competitive pricing is “not required” instead of “encouraged” for purchases of less than $10,000. Thorius also pointed out a change after discussing with County Auditor Dan Widmer that purchases exceeding $75,000 shall require the Board of Supervisors approval, rather than $20,000 that was previously included. A revised procurement policy was sought as the county is looking to apply to the Iowa Department of Homeland Security to reimburse funds spent for cleanup following last year’s derecho.

Washington County Supervisors Considering Animal Confinement Feeding Operation

A public hearing for a proposed animal confinement feeding operation owned by Nathan Tinnes followed by acknowledgment of the operation is set for the Washington County Board of Supervisors’ meeting Tuesday. The agenda also includes a personnel change request for County Attorney John Gish, a quarterly report from the Washington County Ambulance, an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award presentation, and a COVID-19 update.
