Two Colorado police officers were injured Friday when a man who threatened to harm law enforcement opened fire, the Pueblo Chieftain reports.
The two officers – Sgt. Josh Rude and Deputy Nicolas Berumen of the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office – were shot during an hour-long stand-off with 48-year-old Eddie Lovins at his home in Pueblo West.
Police shot a bean bag bullet at Lovins to stop him from firing and then took him into custody.
“We were able to neutralize the suspect, put him in our custody, and checked and there were no injuries (on him),” Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor told the newspaper.
Eddie Lovins, 48, faces two counts of attempted second-degree murder, according to a news release.
Earlier in the day, Lovins, a veteran with a history of mental health issues, had called in threats against the Tennessee State Patrol and the capitol building in Tennessee.
Pueblo County Sheriff s Office deputies first tried to make contact with the suspect near Tenderfoot Lane Friday morning. After no response they went out a second time, around 3:20 p.m., and the suspect began firing multiple rounds at them. He hit one deputy in the head and the other in the left shoulder.
Lovins remained in the home and continued to fire, hitting patrol vehicles and nearby houses, until a police tactical unit was able to apprehend him.
