No motive for the attack was ever reported.
Cunningham was originally charged with second-degree attempted murder along with the assault count, and the case was presented to a grand jury and prosecuted by Livingston County District Attorney Gregory J. McCaffrey, who was on the scene shortly after the incident that evening.
Under the law, Cunningham faces between five and 25 years in state prison as a result of his conviction.
But officials say, based on his plea agreement with the Livingston County District Attorney s Office, the anticipated sentence is 20 years in prison, along with post-release supervision and a waiver of his right to appeal.
Broome, Tioga Sheriffs Discourage Unnecessary Travel During Storm
People in Broome and Tioga counties are being advised to avoid traveling during the snowstorm if possible.
Broome County Sheriff David Harder said those who must travel should allow extra time to reach their destination. They also are urged to leave extra room between vehicles.
People who are involved in crashed are advised to remain in their vehicle to await help.
Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard issued a travel advisory as of 1 p.m. Wednesday. He said unnecessary travel should be postponed to allow road crews to safely handle snow removal.
A National Weather Service winter storm warning for the Binghamton area is scheduled to be in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters predict total snow accumulations of 12 to 20 inches. Snowfall rates of two to three inches an hour are possible.
