The number of shootings taking place in Winston-Salem is on the rise, leaving public officials and law enforcement concerned and looking for answers. In response, a new policing unit is being formed to slow the surge in gun violence. Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough tells WFDD’s David Ford that he’d like to see more attention paid to the root causes behind this latest wave.

Black Lives Matter demonstrators marched demanding a wide range of reforms, from an end to chokeholds to increased funding for education. By early June, Black Lives Matter protests were becoming an almost daily occurrence in Winston-Salem people of all ages and races coming together wanting justice for Floyd’s family. They rallied in parks, marched through neighborhoods bearing signs, crying out against racism, and calling for systemic changes to policing.

Local Community Reflects On One Year After George Floyd s Death

Local leaders and community members are reflecting on what has changed since the death of George Floyd one year ago. A virtual community conversation was held Tuesday to have a deeper discussion among the Forsyth County community. The event called "Black, White & Blue: Building Better Communities Through Conversations" was streamed on Facebook.

The victims are becoming younger. That bothers me, Kimbrough said. You’ve got a whole other generation coming behind. You can’t lock this problem away, but you can educate it away.”Kimbrough recounted his youth growing up in Forsyth County and recalled mentors and neighbors holding him accountable and making sure he didn t deviate from a path that would lead him to success. He only wishes today s youth had the same type of accountability partners. When I was sitting in Blum Park, a guy saw me drinking mad dog and slapped me and told me I was better than that, Kimbrough said.
