WORK has at last begun to expand a Radnorshire cemetery three years after land was bought by the county council adjacent to the current graveyard. Work to extend Presteigne Cemetery has started and, when complete, will provide enough space at the facility for the next 100 years. Powys County Council (PCC) bought the land adjacent to the cemetery off Presteigne and Norton Town Council for £47,000 in 2018 – when it was reported that the cemetery only had enough burial spaces for another seven years. The expansion will reportedly cost £120,000 but the county council said it would cut demand on other nearby council cemeteries.

The council collects a wide range of service information to gauge performance against national and strategic targets which are reported to the council’s cabinet, with quarter three figures being presented to the Cabinet on February 16.
Last March the council invoked its Business Continuity Plan in response to the pandemic to focus on business-critical activities identifying three priority areas, responding to Covid-19, keeping communities safe and resilient and running the council.
POWYS businesses received more than £66 million in grants and nearly 3,500 employees benefitted from £1.7m in payment support – just some of the statistics revealed behind the county council’s response to coronavirus. In figures due to be presented to its cabinet later this month, Powys County Council (PCC) has compiled a third quarter report gauging performance against national and strategic targets. And between the months of October and December 2020, figures reveal that 2,150 positive Covid-19 cases were reported during the period, with 99 per cent of 9,036 contacts traced. A total of 1,032 young people received emotional health and wellbeing support via school youth workers as the council received just shy of 20,000 customer service calls (19,240).
