America, unlike some countries, is not defined by a common ancestry, nor is it tied to an official faith tradition. But it does have a distinct identity and a quasi-religious foundation.
Americans are expected to hold their hands over their hearts when they recite the Pledge of Allegiance or stand for the national anthem. Young people are taught to regard the country s founders almost as saints. The self-evident truths listed in the Declaration of Independence and the key provisions of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights have acquired the status of scripture in the U.S. consciousness.

Two Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies released Monday shed new light on the racial and ethnic disparities in hospitalizations and emergency visits related to COVID-19 last year.

Days after declaring racism a serious public health threat, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a pair of studies further quantifying the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.
The studies, published Monday in
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, examine trends in racial and ethnic disparities in hospitalizations and emergency room visits associated with COVID-19 in 2020.

The Baylor Bears are celebrating their first championship season beating the previously undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs 86-70 Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Gonzaga only had to win one more game to end with a perfect season, but it ends with a 31-1 record. Not since 1979 has an undefeated team lost the title game.

North Korea says it will skip the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo, citing coronavirus concerns – a move that frustrates South Korea s hopes that the games might revive stalled peace talks between the bitter rivals.
The decision to sit out the already delayed Tokyo Games means the North s athletes will be a no-show at the Olympics for the first time since Pyongyang boycotted them in 1988, the year they were held in Seoul.
