Columbia Records co-head of urban music,  Shawn Holiday, is launching a new label and publishing venture with Irving and Billboard can confirm. He will maintain an A&R capacity role with Columbia. The news was first reported by HITS Daily Double, which noted Holiday will continue to work with Polo G, Chloe x Halle and other artists signed to the label. Holiday also held a dual role at Sony/ATV, where he was named head of urban music in January 2019.

But as any serious student of U.S. history knows, racism is always beneath the surface of U.S. politics. The trigger for the current debate was a comment by Sen. Hillary Clinton that “Dr. [Martin Luther] King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It took a president to get it done.” This was taken by many African American politicians and longtime activists as denigrating the entire Black liberation movement.

SFP Research Intern Abigail Magnus is an intern with the SFP research team. Abby (she/hers and they/them) recently completed her Master s in Social Work and Economics, focusing her thesis on the long-term social and economic costs of poverty in the United States. She has experience in public health, housing, and economic research. She most recently worked at the State Innovation Exchange and previously worked for the Colorado Senate Majority Leader during the 2018 session. Abby lives in Denver, Colorado with her three roommates and a golden retriever named Olive. She is passionate about social and economic justice and is interested in a career in state fiscal policy.

Dr Menna Demessie appointed to manage UMG s global Task Force for Meaningful Change

at 4:38PM Universal Music Group has appointed Dr Menna Demessie as SVP and executive director of the company’s global Task Force for Meaningful Change (TFMC). TFMC was established in June 2020 by UMG’s Chairman and CEO, Sir Lucian Grainge, as a force for social justice in the music industry and beyond.  Dr Demessie, a political scientist and social justice advocate with a track record of civic and educational empowerment, will manage the TFMC and its activities. The company also announced that UMG’s EVP, chief people and inclusion officer, Eric Hutcherson, will join Jeff Harleston, general counsel and EVP business & legal affairs, UMG and interim CEO, Def Jam Records, and Ethiopia Habtemariam, president, Motown Records, as a co-chair of the Task Force for Meaningful Change.
