T WAS THE distilled essence of legislative dysfunction. On May 28th the Senate rejected a painstakingly negotiated bipartisan bill that would have set up a commission to study the storming of the Capitol building by incensed Donald Trump supporters on January 6th. Though the vote was 54 in favour and 35 opposed (all of them Republicans), the measure technically failed, because a filibuster ostensibly the threat of debating a bill to death requires 60 votes to avoid it. This flop puts two serious problems with American democracy in relief. One is that Congress can be hamstrung by a minority. The other is that the Republican Party is unwilling to escape the shackles of Trumpism.
The president apparently floated a minimum 15% tax on all corporations as a possible alternative to his original proposal to increase the U.S. corporate tax rate from the current 21% to 28%.
Mr. Biden previously had proposed a minimum 15% tax on income that companies use to report profits, or “book income,” as part of his $2.3 trillion infrastructure proposal.
“He believes that we should continue to look at raising the corporate rate that is a way to pay for a range of ideas,” Ms. Psaki said.
Congressional Republicans say their “red line” in the talks is rolling back parts of the 2017 tax law, which lowered the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% and slashed individual income tax rates across the board.
$1400 Stimulus Check Update: Is There Anymore Money Coming Soon?
The Biden Administration is currently in negotiations with Congressional Republicans over the infrastructure package, per Politico, as the president seeks bipartisan support. However, stimulus checks are not part of those negotiations.
The federal government, it appears, is nearly finished distributing the $1,400 stimulus checks from the American Rescue Plan. And since then, many Americans have been calling for a fourth round of stimulus. There have even been multiple letters from Democrats in Congress, calling for additional checks, and a change.org petition calling for more checks has now reached 2.25 million signatures.
However, it doesn’t appear likely that legislation for additional checks will pass this year.
