Norton, Beyer to Reintroduce Bill Requiring Federal Police Officers to Wear Body Cameras

Don Beyer January 14, 2021 Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) announced today that they will reintroduce their Federal Police Camera and Accountability Act, which would require uniformed federal police officers, including U.S. Capitol Police, to wear body cameras and have dashboard cameras in police vehicles. Last Congress, their bill was included in the House-passed George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. The District of Columbia and Fairfax County both require officers to wear body cameras and have dashboard cameras in marked vehicles. “There is an urgent need for this bill,” Norton said. “Capitol Police tried to stop last week’s mob attack on the Capitol, but without body cameras, we have been forced to rely on social media streams, cameras in the Capitol and pubic reporting to learn what happened. Norton Announces Date for Public Hearing with Army Corps of Engineers and Army on Rule Restricting Public Access to the Washington Channel, Extension of Public Comment Period on Rule

Jan 6, 2021 Press Release WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington have agreed to her request to hold a public forum on the proposed rule restricting public access to the Washington Channel and to extend the public comment period on the proposed rule.  The public forum will take place on January 27, 2021, at 6:00 p.m., and the public comment period on the proposed rule has been extended from December 29, 2020, to January 28, 2021. USACE previously extended the comment period on the rule after Norton argued that the original comment period did not allow adequate time for public input. Norton spoke personally with Major General Omar Jones, Commanding General of Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region, and he responded yesterday.
