DAVENPORT, Iowa Davenport City Council members officially decided on a $43 million spending plan comprised of mostly federal Covid-relief funds. The council met on Wednesday, July 28, to vote on the 18-item plan. It passed on a 9-1 vote, with Fourth Ward Alderman Raymond Ambrose being the one dissenter.
Overall, the West Locust Sewer Project won the largest chunk of money. With the $14 million its now been allocated - over a third of the ARP budget - the council is hopeful that project can officially be finished. The second largest allocation was $6 million to the new Main Street Landing Adventure Play & Event Lawn.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. The Rock Island city council unanimously voted to increase utilities on the city s water, wastewater, and storm water through 2025. It came after a dramatic and, at times, heated city council meeting over the future, possible privatization of the city s water.
Water utility rates will now increase 5.5% every year through 2025 for all user classes. Wastewater utilities will increase at a rate of 4.5% every year through 2025 for all user classes. And the storm water utility rate will increase by $0.34 every year through 2025 for the average household.

THOMSON, Ill. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos visited a job fair at the United States Penitentiary, Thomson, on Friday morning, saying help is just around the corner.
The prison is regarded as one of the most understaffed federal prisons in the country. As of July 23, USP Thomson had 118 job openings. We reported a few months ago that things had gotten so bad, other staff members - including nurses and phycologists - had been forced to work as guards.
