During his first impeachment, which began in late 2019, there were some fears that Democrats were overreaching, perhaps nudging soft Trump supporters back into his ranks. Ultimately, it did not appear to move public opinion one way or another. There is no sense of overreach this time around. An ABC News/Ipsos poll released on Monday found 58pc of Americans believed Trump should have been convicted.
For those Democrats who were motivated by political considerations, there was another kind of win.
