Wife, kids and friends seek release of Kappan Journalist’s family hit the streets to seek justice
The family of a Malayalam journalist lodged in a Mathura jail for the past three months on what his wife says are false charges staged a sit-in protest in Thiruvananthapuram last week and plans another in a fortnight.
Siddique Kappan, 41, was arrested on October 5 while on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh where a Dalit girl had been fatally brutalised. He was accused of being an extremist and charged under the anti-terror law UAPA for allegedly trying to foment trouble.
On Tuesday, about 20 people including his wife Raihanath, their three children and a few relatives and neighbours protested in the Kerala capital while honouring the Covid-related prohibition against large gatherings.

New Delhi, Jan 15 : Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi has called a meeting of party leaders from Kerala next week to discuss the upcoming Assembly polls in wake of the setback the party received in the recent local body polls, sources said.
The leaders called include former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, state President M. Ramchandran and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ramesh Chennithala. The Congress in the state is pitted against the ruling Left Democratic Front, but not making headway despite the anti-incumbency factor, due to its internal rifts with factions led by Chandy and Chennithala scrambling for supremacy, party insiders say.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 14: Aiming to woo voters in poll-bound Kerala, the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Wednesday released its draft election manifesto highlighting that its Nyay Yojna, proposed by Rahul Gandhi, to help poor families, will be implementedin the state.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ramesh Chennithala said the final manifesto will be prepared after consulting people and the Front will approach the election with a democratic manifesto. Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had proposed the Nyay Yojna, a minimum income guarantee scheme, to help the poor families in the country if voted to power.
