Kerala’s ruling Left on Wednesday dominated the local body polls months before the Assembly elections, basing its campaign on its performance in the face of an Opposition smear campaign that rode on financial controversies involving people close to senior Marxist leaders.
The Left Democratic Front retained the Kozhikode, Kollam, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram corporations and wrested the coveted Kochi corporation from the Congress-led United Democratic Front, which retained Kannur alone among the six larger civic bodies.

Bucking the anti-incumbency trend, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) almost swept the three-tier local body polls in Kozhikode district. The LDF won the Kozhikode Corporation and the District Panchayat, both with two-third majority in style like last time. Left parties, which have been ruling the Kozhikode Corporation for the past 45 years, could counter the campaigns of both the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the BJP-led National Democratic Front (NDA) in the district. New Delhi: The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Democratic Front in Kerala on Wednesday appeared set for a sweep in the local body polls in the state, while the Bharatiya Janata Party seemed to have made some gains, leading in Pandalam, the centre of protestsagainst women s entry into Sabarimala, among others.
The Left Democratic Front was leading in 514 of the 941 grama panchayats, five of the six city corporations and 11 of the 14 district panchayats, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, describing the strong performance as people s victory.
