Six new cases of COVID reported in Kodiak

The Kodiak Emergency Operations Center reported six new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend: four on Friday and two on Saturday.  The new cases bring the borough’s active case count to 19, with no one hospitalized right now.  Five were tested on Jan. 28. One was tested on Jan. 27. Of the six new cases, five were close contacts of previous cases. One was considered community transmission.  On Friday, the Kodiak Island Borough School District announced that someone at Main Elementary had tested positive for the virus.  In Kodiak, KANA, Kodiak Community Health Center, Kodiak Ambulatory Care Clinic and Safeway are offering vaccines. Appointments can be found at covidvax.alaska.gov.

SPOTLIGHT: SANDRA COLLINS-JACKSON

Sandra Collins-Jackson, a licensed professional counselor in Kodiak, spent years standing up for Kodiak’s most vulnerable residents. Now, the coronavirus pandemic has given her an opportunity to help her community in a different way.  After the virus reached Kodiak last year, she began to research complicated, ever-changing COVID-19 information and post her findings on social media. She pored over medical journals and listened to Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s daily briefings, and shared her findings on Facebook.  Collins-Jackson knew that many people who worked full time and were raising families had limited hours in a day to parse COVID-19 information, which changed day by day.

EOC vaccine clinic today

About 100 people have signed up for the Kodiak Emergency Operations Center’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic today. Walk-up appointments will be accepted, EOC Director Mike Tvenge said.  The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot next to the Harbormaster’s office. Two heated tents have been constructed to host the clinic, which will administer the Pfizer vaccine. The tents are field hospitals the EOC purchased with Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security money.  Anyone over the age of 65 can get the jab. Second doses, which the Pfizer vaccine requires, will be given at a similar clinic on Feb. 19. Masks and social distancing will be required.
