Since November 2020, hundreds of villagers and flash mobs in Goa have been protesting against three major infrastructure projects in the picturesque Mollem town close to the state s border with Karnataka. They say the projects-to double a railway track, widen a national highway and build a sub-station for a power transmission line from Karnataka-will cause irreparable harm to the forests adjacent to the Mollem National Park, a 240 sq. km protected area in the Western Ghats.
Environmental activists claim some 100,000 trees face the axe due to these projects. A fourth project, the 345-acre IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) campus in the ecologically sensitive Melauli area of north Goa, was moved out on January 15 after protests from locals.

The State has succeeded in reining in wildlife crimes through various steps, including intensified surveillance and enhancement of forest staff, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.
Inaugurating the first phase of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB)-funded development of the Kottoor Elephant Rehabilitation Centre on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayan said Kerala had become a model for forest and wildlife conservation in the country. Nefarious activities in forests such as poaching, especially rackets that targeted wild elephants, were countered through modernising the Forest and Wildlife Department, expanding its network of forest stations and engaging more number of tribal youths for forest conservation.

IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh handed over a cash reward of ₹10 lakh to Peh(Paoyi) village of Ukhrul district at a gathering held at the Secretariat in Imphal on Monday.
Local MLA Khasim Vashum, Chief Secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar and DGP LM Khaute were also present at the function.
The cash reward was given to the Peh (Paoyi) village authority for voluntarily taking part in the Manipur government s war on drugs campaign and destroying poppy plants grown in their village.
