Bloomberg have a new report suggesting there is ‘unrest’ at Sony as, a few years ago, a internal group called the Visual Arts Service Group “decided they wanted to have more creative control and lead game direction rather than being supporting actors on popular titles such as Spider-Man and Uncharted.”
The leader of the group recruited around thirty developers and started work remaking The Last Of Us for PlayStation 5. According to the report Sony never officially acknowledged the existence of the group or funded them and eventually they fell apart. The PS5 remake of The Last of Us is now back with Naughty Dog.

The Last Of Us PlayStation 5 Remake Reportedly In The Works
Sony is said to have greenlit a remake of acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive
The Last of Us as part of a wider report detailing the company’s arguably unsustainable approach to first-party games development.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a group of around 30 developers recruited by Visual Arts Service Group founder Michael Mumbauer in 2007 had started working on a reimagining of Joel and Ellie’s tale of survival some time ago. The project’s aim, besides giving Naughty Dog’s original some added bells and whistles (including next-gen visuals), was to release on PlayStation 5 and showcase the console’s power but it was hampered by several hurdles, including what Schreier describes as Sony’s obsession with blockbuster experiences.
The Last of Us PS5 Remake Reportedly In Development

Sony s no stranger to remakes, as the ones that the company has pursued have done quite well, including The Last of Us and Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 4, and that s not to mention games like the Final Fantasy VII Remake on the platform. A new report from Bloomberg says that there was and is actually another remake of the original The Last of Us in development, but the team that developed the idea is no longer the primary team creating it. According to the report Sony s Visual Arts Service Group was responsible for the idea, and for those unfamiliar, the Visual Arts Service Group has been responsible for helping to complete games designed at other Sony studios in a variety of ways, and while they may no longer be leading the project, it does seem to still be in development.
