Wildlife preparedness survey results preview
At the beginning of the 2020 fire season, we asked residents in five northeastern California counties about efforts they were taking to prepare for wildfires and what barriers they perceived in reaching their goals.
Nearly all indicated that wildfire had impacted their community within the past decade.
Almost half of the residents indicated their home insurance had been affected in some way (e.g. insurance rate increase, dropped policy) by wildfire risk.
Most residents were creating and maintaining defensible space on their property by doing the work themselves or paying for it out of their own pocket – very little was grant funded.

FIREFIGHTERS HERE AT THE BERNALILLO COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT ARE WARNING THAT ANOTHER FIRE LIKE THAT CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME. FIRES IN OUR STATE CAN HAPPEN IN AN INSTANT. California’s Insurance Commissioner is calling for insurance companies to support home-hardening and community mitigation safety efforts ahead of wildfire season. It’s Wildfire Awareness Month, and Commissioner Ricardo Lara is taking action to protect and prepare Californians.
“Common sense wildfire mitigation we know protects lives, protects homes, and our first responders,” Lara said. “Hardened homes and communities are easier to protect and defend. Our first responders and local communities are doing their part. Insurance companies need to start doing theirs as well.”
Currently, eight insurers and the California FAIR Plan offer discounts to homeowners who take steps to harden their homes.

It’s Wildfire Preparedness Week! 2020 saw California have one of the worst wildfire seasons ever. We had more than 9,000 fires that burned over 4 MILLION acres.
You can take these steps to increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire:
1.Get any kind of leaves or debris off your roof since your roof is your home’s most
2.If you have a fireplace close the flue during fire season to keep embers from getting into your house through the chimney
3.Stock up on garden hoses, ones that are long enough to reach all areas of your home and other structures on your property
