With that, the Kern County Fire Department is ramping up training, and local crews will play a major role in helping, including those who take to the skies. Last year, thousands of fire personnel were on the ground battling flames as wildfires took over more than 4 million acres of the state. But those ground crews also relied heavily on that support from above.

(KTVZ) May is Wildfire Awareness Month, and the Oregon Office of Emergency Management is scheduled to host a wildfire preparedness and prevention panel webinar event on Thursday in partnership with Keep Oregon Green, the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal, Oregon Department of Forestry, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State University Forestry & Natural Resources Extension Fire Program. As part of the campaign, Extension’s Living With Fire Program will be offering a series of webinars on wildfire-related topics. Formerly, Extension and its partners concentrated their efforts on wildfire awareness during May, declaring it “Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month.”

The group is a coalition committed to ensuring that homeowners, communities and businesses are protected with improved vegetation management, land practices and the availability of affordable insurance. The group has been busy telling people about Wildfire Awareness Month in May, and has released informational resources and statements from experts encouraging preparedness. “While it is not possible to eliminate wildfire risk, we are not powerless against it. We must come together as communities and homeowners with a pragmatic approach to mitigate risk at all levels and ultimately reduce property damage,” said Roy Wright, president and CEO of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.
