Pilot program aims to steer minority students toward HBCU cyber degrees

A new diversity pilot program by Cyber.org is designed to encourage high-school students to study cybersecurity at historically black colleges and universities. Infosec workforce and economic development organization Cyber.org this week officially announced the launch of a new diversity-minded pilot program designed to expose K-12 students to cybersecurity as a career option and connect them with historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) that offer cyber degrees. This “talent feeder program” has named Caddo Parish Public Schools in northwestern Louisiana as its first participating education district. The grant will enable two of the district’s schools, Huntington High School and Southwood High School, to stand up computer lab environments and bring in a veteran cyber educator to train the faculty on how to teach the curriculum to their pupils. (KSLA) - On Thursday, April 29, Caddo Parish Public Schools started vaccinating students 16 and older. The shots began with students at CE Byrd High School. This is optional for students, and kids must have a parent or guardian’s permission. Students will receive the Pfizer vaccine. Right now, that’s the only shot approved for those as young as 16. LSU Health Shreveport’s Dr. John Vanchiere says this is a safe vaccine that kids need. Bossier Parish Schools says it’s planning to schedule a clinic before school lets out for the summer, but they haven’t determined exactly when yet.

(KSLA) - A teacher at a Caddo elementary school faces a charge of simple battery following an incident that happened at the school on Tuesday, April 20. According to the police report, Melody Moffett, 66, is facing a charge of simple battery. Shreveport police tell KSLA that Moffett was arrested and booked into Shreveport City Jail. The child’s mother said she was not notified by the school, Judson Elementary, about the incident, and did not know about it until her son told her in the car that afternoon. Another mother contacted her later that afternoon saying that her child had also told her about the incident at school that day.

Robert Middleton is a leader who understands the key role supporting teachers plays in the climate and culture of a campus and in overall student achievement,” said Superintendent Lamar Goree. “With an unwavering faith and commitment to excellence, I have no doubt he is the right person to lead Magnet High in its next chapter.” Seeing his role as one built on servant leadership and addressing the needs of stakeholders, Middleton said he was honored to be selected for the position.
