Flora FukWa Cheng

Flora Cheng passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, 2021, at the age of 93, at home in Davis, under her daughters’ care. Known by many as “Grandma Flora”, she will be remembered for her inherent ability to love and care for everyone and her sweet spirit.
Flora was born in southern China in 1927. She studied nursing and after graduating, worked for the Queen Mary hospital in Hong Kong. There she met and married Kingsley, they were married 51 years. In 1959, the family immigrated to the USA. Eventually settling in Davis, Flora worked as a surgical nurse at Woodland Memorial and then Sutter General hospitals. At one time, Flora and Kin were the owner/operators of “The Ice Cream Store,” formerly on G Street. Throughout her life, Flora loved travel, real estate, gardening and feeding people. Healthcare workers and executives from three state and local hospital systems overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic gathered via Zoom on Tuesday to issue a plea to the public: “We need your help.”
With the holidays getting underway, representatives of Sutter Health, Diginity Health and Kaiser Permanente urged everyone to avoid travel and gathering and just stay home.
“Right now we are struggling,” said Dr. Vanessa Walker of Sutter Health. “We are seeing unprecedented numbers of patients with very severe illnesses…. requiring nurses and physicians that don’t normally provide care for these very critically ill patients to really stretch to the tops of their license and try to deliver the best care that they can.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fiona Moore has been one of those healthcare workers on the front lines.
A registered nurse in the Sutter Davis Hospital emergency department, Moore has spent the last nine months treating COVID patients as they’ve arrived some who walked in with a cough or fever, others who arrived code three in an ambulance needing to be intubated.

Following months of treating the coronavirus pandemic and putting themselves at risk to help others, medical professionals have spoken of their relief in finally getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
With hospitalizations across the U.S. hitting record levels, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized a vaccine developed by Moderna for emergency use the second COVID-19 vaccine to get such approval.
The FDA commissioner, Stephen Hahn said that the availability of a vaccine in addition to the one developed by Pfizer, was another crucial step in the fight against this global pandemic.
