GFD Deliberates On Recognition In New Labour Act

  The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) on Tuesday held a stakeholder engagement to deliberate on provisions in the Labour Act that are unfavourable to its members and workers in general. The engagement was to enable members and stakeholders to collectively outline the provisions for consideration in the ongoing review of the Labour Act. Members of the GFD are from the Ghana Blind Union, Ghana National Association of the Deaf, Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled, Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism, Mental Health Society of Ghana, and Inclusion Ghana (A group of Persons with Intellectual Disability). Mr Samuel Agbenyega, Senior Industrial Relations Officer, National Labour Commission (NLC), said employers had the right to terminate appointments when workers violated or went contrary to the provisions of a contract, hence advised people to read and understand the terms of contracts well before signing them.

FDA Registers More Local Products Amid COVID-19

  Despite the negative impact of COVID-19 on the economy in 2020, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) registered more locally made products than in 2019. In 2020, the Authority registered 14,690 products out of which 5,186 were locally produced as against 12,152 products registered in 2019 with only 2,717 made locally. Mrs Delase A.A. Darko, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FDA, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, said, generally, the FDA registered more products in all categories last year than in 2019. The products comprised medical devices, foods, drugs and nutraceuticals, cosmetics and household chemicals, herbal products and food supplements.

The programme, which was introduced by government to cushion Ghanaian businesses from the impact of the pandemic largely did not factor peculiar needs of PWDs in the implementation, according to the research conducted in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi. Mr. Christopher Agbega, COVID-19 Project Officer of GFD, presenting key findings of the research which was to assessed the impact of COVID-19 on PWDs, said the right channel to get the information to PWDs were not used, so most of their members were not aware.

Ghana Somubi Dwumadie Launches Gh¢11 million Grants Fund For Disability Advocates

Ghana Somubi Dwumadie has launched its second call for proposals for disability Advocacy in the country. At media launch in Accra on Friday, December 18, 2020, team leader of the programme, madam Lyla Adwan-Kamara disclosed that the programme planned to award grants totalling up to Gh¢11,000,000. Proposals to the fund are expected to be projects which build evidence and effectiveness for mental health and disability inclusion interventions, and ensure that people with disabilities, including people with mental health disabilities, are in the lead on approaches to improve their wellbeing, social and economic outcomes and rights. Key objectives of the grant are to improve the wellbeing of, and empower people with disabilities, including mental health disabilities and to reduce stigma and discrimination. Also to generate research to inform policy and practice on disability and mental health.
