A police standoff with an armed man in Pinole this morning led to a shelter-in-place order that closed Shannon and Tara Hills elementary schools for the day and prompted Pinole Middle School to shelter in place. No humans were injured as a result of the ordeal, but the suspect is believed to have fatally shot a dog Sunday night, police said.
The incident unfolded about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when police responded to a home in the 700 block of Marlesta Road in Pinole after the 32-year-old suspect’s mother called saying her son was suffering from delusions, making paranoid statements and was in possession of her handgun, police said. The suspect’s identity was not immediately available.

A Pinole manis in custody after a standoff in which he killed a dog, police said.
PINOLE, Calif. - An armed man whose mother said was having a mental health breakdown ended up surrendering to police after a nearly 4-hour standoff in Pinole, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff s Office and police.
No human injuries were suffered, but the police did say that the man killed a dog.
Pinole police said trouble in the area began Sunday night, when a mother called police to report her 32-year-old son was having delusions, making paranoid statements and was in possession of her handgun.
John Burris, a Bay Area-based civil rights attorney representing families of both men Hall killed in civil suits, said witnesses have disputed the official account, saying Wilson was backing up. Burris has said it was a kill shot to Wilson s face. Wilson, the African American son of a retired of a retired Southern California police officer, died in the hospital the following week.
The second shooting is still being investigated. Families of both deceased men said they suffered from mental health issues.
The report to be presented Tuesday details how Danville officers usually come to the city after serving as Contra Costa County sheriff s deputies, as Hall did. A staff report attached to the meeting agenda says officers are professional and well trained and undergo specific training in de-escalation techniques, bias awareness, and cultural diversity.
