Racing Point boss Otmar Szafnauer has lamented his team’s bad luck over the course of the 2020 Formula 1 season, but maintains there is plenty of cause for optimism heading into 2021.
Sitting third in the constructor’s championship coming into the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi, a weekend that did not go their way saw them leapfrogged by McLaren, with a deficit of just seven points.
While driver Lance Stroll was able to add to the team’s score with a point from his P10 finish, his teammate Sergio Perez started the race from the pitlane for exceeding his quota of power unit components, and yet managed to get up to third before a power unit failure forced him to retire from the race.

Renault F1 finished fifth in the Formula 1 Constructors Championship in both 2019 and 2020.

Stoll, 66, currently serves as team boss of both the Renault F1 team and the Renault eDams team in Formula E. Stoll has led Renault s F1 and Formula E efforts since 2016. He will step down on December 31.

‘A year of missed opportunities’ for Racing Point

Racing Point boss Otmar Szafnauer said 2020 was a “year of missed opportunities” for his team, but one with many positives to take away.
It was generally accepted that Racing Point had at least the third-best car coming into the 2020 season. After all, it was controversially based on the double-title winning Mercedes W10 of 2019.
And although over the course of the season teams like McLaren and Renault made strides in closing the deficit to Racing Point, the RP20 remained arguably the strongest package if Racing Point were able to put a race weekend together.
