“The current estimate is $4.5m.” While the Insurance Council has revealed there have been 3538 claims costing $43.8m filed so far across Canterbury for the weather event, Ratahi said the TDC would not be using insurance for the repairs. The council would instead be calling on emergency funding with a significant portion, approximately $3m, coming from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. “In addition to the three seriously damaged bridges requiring full replacement, nine others have been identified as seriously damaged. “These are on Canal Rd, Horsfall Rd, Hall Rd, Maslin Rd, Slip Panel Rd, Waitohi-Temuka Rd, and Winchester-Hanging Rock Rd and two bridges on Route 72 Winchester-Geraldine Road.”
There were also 842 commercial and business-related claims, and 77 claims for crop and livestock losses. “We’ve said on many occasions that we can expect to see more frequent and disruptive weather events as the effects of climate change increase, and sadly we are starting to see that pattern emerge,” Grafton said.

Insurance customers through the Canterbury region lodged 3,538 claims costing over $43.8million for insured losses following the 29 May â 1 June floods according to provisional figures released by the Insurance Council of New Zealand â Te KÄhui Inihua o Aotearoa.
âThe figures reflect the vast damage floods leave behind, and how important it is to have insurance to help you get back on your feet when the unexpected happens,â says Tim Grafton, CE ICNZ.
The provisional total includes 2,327 house and contents claims, 288 claims for motor, 842 commercial and business-related claims, and 77 crop and other claims (which can include claims for livestock).
