Three people were killed and more than two dozen injured on Sunday when a suspected smuggling boat broke apart off Cabrillo National Monument at California s Point Loma, San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
The initial call arrived just before 10am (1700 GMT) and prompted a large emergency response, including the US Coast Guard and state and local agencies, as the magnitude of the incident became clear.
The 40-foot (12-m) boat had been pummeled to pieces by the surf by the time rescue boats arrived, said Rick Romero, lifeguard lieutenant for San Diego Fire-Rescue.

“I’m really struggling to think of a situation where the highest paid members . were 10 times higher than a very similar settlement that was reached in the same 12- to 24-month period,” said Loyola Law School professor Adam Zimmerman, who teaches complex litigation and served as counsel to the special master for the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund.
San Diego boat capsizes killing 4, injuring 24 in possible smuggling operation
A boat off the coast of San Diego overturned Sunday morning, killing four people and injuring 24 others one critically in what authorities say was a smuggling operation.
The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. off Point Loma near Cabrillo National Monument. Lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies responded to the scene after reports of an overturned vessel in the surf near the rocky peninsula.
Authorities recovered three bodies in the surf, San Diego Lifeguard Services Lt. Rick Romero said. One person was rescued from a cliff and 22 others managed to make it to shore, he said.
A suspected smuggling operation that resulted in at least three deaths off the San Diego coast Sunday came after the Border Patrol, Coast Guard and other agencies warned that an alarming increase in maritime smuggling could have deadly consequences.
The agencies announced Friday that they were dedicating extra resources to coastal land, sea and air – helicopters and planes – patrols through Monday. Those resources were tapped Sunday when an overloaded cabin cruiser broke apart in rough seas, prompting a harrowing rescue operation near the Cabrillo National Monument.
Rescuers found a large debris field of splintered wood and personal effects. Seven people were plucked from the turbulent waters; three did not survive. One person was rescued from a cliff and 22 made it to shore on their own. Twenty-seven people were taken to hospitals with hypothermia or other injuries.
