Burned out, but still burning - All Models Are Wrong

All Models Are Wrong Morning sun, 28th December 2020, Hastings You’re tired. You’re burned out. You don’t know how you keep getting up in the morning, keep switching on the news, keep looking after everyone around you – or asking for help, again and again. What keeps you going? Maybe it’s the friend who sends you just the right message at just the right moment. Maybe it’s seeing the tireless efforts of others, and the sense of community in working together. Maybe it’s the energy and creativity of young people, and our duty of care. I’m talking, of course, about Covid-19. But there are parallels in climate change. And in other fights: structural racism, entrenched sexism and homophobia, the inequalities of disability, class and poverty, culture wars, fear and dismissal of others with different views. I see it every day – on social media, on video calls – this tiredness. Why persist? How to carry on?

Boohoo: USDAW condemns Burnley-based fashion firm s refusal to meet

RETAIL union USDAW has condemned Boohoo owner Mahmud Kamani’s refusal to meet with them following a series of allegations about the company’s treatment of employees. This was also prompted by Mr Kamani claiming before a committee of MPs last week that he could easily move the company, which maintains a large distribution centre in Burnley, overseas if its practices are scrutinised too closely. USDAW officials have been frustrated by Mr Kamani telling the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee he would not meet with them because he personally, rather this his employees, did not wish to join the union, an explanation they described as ‘bizarre.’

Air pollution death ruling: What comes next?

BBC News By Claire Marshall image captionElla lived near the South Circular road in London, which is notoriously congested For the first time in the UK - and possibly the world - air pollution has been recognised as a cause of a person s death. But was the ruling just a one-off? And what does it mean for others? On 16 December, Southwark Coroner s Court in London found that air pollution made a material contribution to the death of nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah. She had lived near the South Circular Road in Lewisham and died in 2013, following an asthma attack. Her case has been making headlines around the globe.
