Microsoft, Salesforce and Oracle are working on a digital Covid vaccination passport
A coalition known as the Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI) which includes Microsoft, Salesforce and Oracle, as well as U.S. health care non-profit Mayo Clinic was announced on Thursday.
The initiative is committed to empowering individuals with digital access to their vaccination records based on open, interoperable standards.
The current vaccination record system does not readily support convenient access, control and sharing of verifiable vaccination records. VCI coalition members are working to enable digital access to vaccination records using the open, interoperable SMART Health Cards specification, based on W3C Verifiable Credential and HL7 FHIR standards.

The technology would allow individuals to obtain a copy of their immunization records through a digital wallet of their choice, such as Apple Wallet or Google Pay, while those without smartphones would receive paper printed with QR codes containing verifiable credentials.

A coalition of technology firms and health organizations announced plans Thursday for a digital vaccination certificate, which can be used on smartphones to show evidence of inoculation for Covid-19. The Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI) includes the Mayo Clinic, Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce. The companies said they were working on a way to get digital credentials which some call a vaccination passport widely recognized, as a way to help people return to work, school, events, and travel.

Delta Air Lines lost $755 million in the fourth quarter, bringing its losses to nearly $12.4 billion in 2020, a year in which the airline industry was battered by a pandemic that crippled air travel.
“Our December quarter results capped the toughest year in Delta’s history,” Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive, said in a statement Tuesday morning. “While our challenges continue in 2021, I am optimistic this will be a year of recovery and a turning point that results in an even stronger Delta.”
