Home Office official in charge of protecting UK borders gets £13,000 bonus plus his £145,000 salary

Share Tory MP Tim Loughton, a member of the Commons Home Affairs Committee, said: ‘Bonuses should be linked to success, not failure.’ He added that he was surprised the bonus had been paid ‘during a pandemic when many people are lucky to hold on to their salaries’. Home Office sources said that Mr Williams had been ‘responsible for the Nationality and Borders Bill overhauling the decades -old asylum system to prevent illegal entry’. Matthew Rycroft, permanent secretary at the Home Office, said: ‘I am hugely grateful to Glyn Williams and the excellent service he provides. ‘It is important that we offer competitive salaries and bonuses to recruit, retain and motivate the best senior executives.’

Number of English Channel crossings surpasses 2020 record five months quicker

The number of people who have made the dangerous journey across the English Channel in small boats this year has passed the total for all of 2020 – with more than five months left of 2021. At least 287 migrants succeeded in reaching the UK on Tuesday, bringing the total for the year to at least 8,452, according to available official data compiled by the PA news agency. This eclipses the figure for the whole of 2020, when 8,417 people crossed the Dover Strait aboard small boats. These figures are based on Home Office data obtained and analysed by PA. One charity condemned the Government’s handling of the issue, saying it “loses all credibility” with the new record.
