Team Europe is backing the new Guinea-Mali 225 kV power line with €330 million financing to provide clean and affordable energy to millions in West Africa.
This new EU support for the interconnector project between the hydroelectric power plants of Guinea and Mali as part of the West African Power Pool will provide millions of people in the region will access to clean and affordable energy. Once complete the new 225 kV interconnector power line will provide an alternative to expensive and unreliable generators on the electricity grid and supply green power to local villages and the wider region.
The completion of the 225 kV Linsan-Fomi interconnector will link the Guinea-Mali, Côte d Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea (CLSG), and Gambia River Basin Development Organisation (OMVG) projects, covering extensive rural electrification programmes along the power line corridors.

The Gambia River Basin Development Organization (which involves The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal) has awarded the contract for the construction of Sambangalou multi-purpose dam in the Kédougou region, south-east of Senegal, close to the Guinean border.
The over US$ 471m contract was awarded to a consortium composed of VINCI Construction Grand Projects, lead company, and VINCI Construction Terrassement, subsidiaries of VINCI Construction which has 75% stake in the partnership, and their partners Andritz Hydro Germany and Andritz Hydro Austria, the two of which are subsidiaries of the Andritz Group, an Austrian hydroelectric power stations turbine designer and manufacturer that has 25% stake in the Sambangalou multi-purpose dam syndicate.

A consortium led by French construction company, VINCI Construction, has signed a $470-million contract with the Gambia River Basin Development Organization to build the Sambangalou dam.
The Organization – in which The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal are member countries – will work with VINCI to construct a 91m high dam with a capacity of 128 MW, located in the southeast of the country and close to the Guinean border.
The dam aims to provide renewable energy, supply clean drinking water to local communities in the region and improve irrigation systems on farmland. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2021, and approximately 1,000 people will be employed by the project and trained locally.
